Choosing fabric for underwear is not only about softness. From a manufacturer’s point of view, the best underwear fabric must balance skin comfort, stretch recovery, breathability, washing performance and stable quality in bulk production.
Different brands may use different materials depending on their target market. Daily underwear, sports underwear, shapewear and seamless underwear all have different fabric requirements. A fabric that feels soft in the hand may not always perform well after cutting, sewing, repeated washing or long hours of wear.
What makes a good underwear fabric?
For underwear, we usually pay attention to five key points: softness, breathability, moisture control, elasticity and durability. The fabric should feel smooth against the skin, allow heat and moisture to move away from the body, and recover well after stretching.
For fitted underwear, stretch recovery is especially important. If the fabric stretches but does not return properly, the garment can lose shape after wearing or washing. This is why many underwear fabrics use spandex blended with nylon, polyester, cotton, modal or other fibers.
Cotton underwear fabric
Cotton is still a common choice for everyday underwear because it is soft, familiar and comfortable for many consumers. It is suitable for basic briefs, children’s underwear and casual daily styles.
However, cotton absorbs moisture and dries more slowly than many synthetic blends. For sports underwear or quick-dry products, pure cotton is usually not the best option. Many brands prefer cotton blended with spandex to improve stretch and fit.
Modal and viscose blends
Modal and viscose fabrics are popular for underwear that needs a softer and smoother handfeel. They drape well and feel comfortable on the skin, which makes them suitable for women’s underwear, loungewear and premium basic styles.
The main point is fabric stability. During production, the knitting structure, dyeing process and finishing control must be handled carefully, otherwise the fabric may shrink, deform or lose its smooth touch after washing.
Nylon spandex fabric for fitted underwear
Nylon spandex fabric is widely used in modern underwear because it offers a smooth handfeel, good elasticity and strong recovery. It is suitable for briefs, bras, sports underwear, seamless underwear and shapewear.
Compared with cotton, nylon spandex usually dries faster and gives a cleaner, more supportive fit. For brands that need lightweight underwear with a close-to-body feel, nylon spandex jersey, mesh or jacquard structures are often practical choices.
Polyester spandex fabric
Polyester spandex is often selected when durability, color stability and cost control are important. It can be used for sports underwear, active base layers and functional underwear products.
Polyester itself is not always as soft as nylon or modal, so finishing is important. With proper knitting and finishing, polyester spandex fabric can provide good quick-dry performance and stable production quality.
Mesh fabric for breathable underwear panels
Mesh fabric is not usually used for the whole underwear body, but it is very useful in breathable zones and design panels. Lightweight mesh can help improve ventilation in sports underwear, bras, shapewear and performance garments.
For underwear use, mesh fabric should not feel rough. The yarn, density and finishing must be selected carefully to avoid irritation, especially for styles that contact the skin directly.
How manufacturers choose underwear fabric
When we develop underwear fabric for customers, we do not only check the fiber name. We also review GSM, width, stretch direction, recovery rate, handfeel, color fastness, shrinkage and sewing performance.
A suitable underwear fabric should match the final garment. For example, daily underwear may need softness and breathability, sports underwear may need quick-dry performance and support, while shapewear requires stronger recovery and dimensional stability.
So, what fabric is best for underwear?
There is no single best fabric for every underwear product. Cotton is comfortable for basic daily wear. Modal and viscose blends are suitable for soft-touch underwear. Nylon spandex is a strong choice for fitted, smooth and elastic underwear. Polyester spandex works well for durable and quick-dry styles. Mesh fabric is useful when breathability and lightweight structure are required.
For underwear brands, the better approach is to choose fabric according to the product position, wearing scenario and expected performance. As a textile manufacturer, Changle Textile can support fabric development for underwear, sportswear, swimwear and other apparel applications, including custom knitting, dyeing, finishing and sample evaluation.
