There is no universal winner between stretch lace and rigid lace. Stretch lace is usually the first sample direction when a panel must follow body movement and retain an acceptable pattern after extension. Rigid lace is usually the first direction when stable motif placement, controlled cutting and limited shape change matter more. Make the final decision on the intended panel, lining and seam construction, not from a product name or a hand-stretch demonstration alone.

For custom manufacturing, stretch lace and rigid lace are starting directions rather than complete product specifications. Composition, weight, usable width, motif repeat, stretch direction, recovery, colour and finishing requirements should be developed around the garment application and confirmed through sampling.

What do stretch lace and rigid lace actually describe?

Stretch lace is designed to extend in one or more directions. That extension may come from elastomeric yarn, fabric construction, or a combination of both. The name does not state how far the fabric extends, how strongly it recovers, whether the motif remains balanced, or whether the material can support a garment panel.

Rigid lace is selected for greater pattern and panel stability, but rigid should not be interpreted as mathematically zero stretch. Yarn movement, finishing and the open structure can still produce limited mechanical give. Check that behaviour in the actual fabric direction before cutting or bulk approval.

Full-width lace fabric and narrow lace trim need separate specifications. ISO 20932-1:2018 covers strip tests for determining fabric elasticity, while ISO 20932-3:2018 covers determination of elasticity for narrow fabrics. The buyer and mill should agree on the applicable method, direction, conditioning and reporting conditions before comparing results.

Choose the first sample by lingerie panel job

A fabric name becomes useful only after the team defines what the panel must do. Use the following table as a sampling guide rather than a universal construction rule.

Do not assume that decorative lace is also the support system. A bra wing, underband or shaping zone may need a separate lining or power mesh fabric selected for recovery and holding force. Evaluate the lace for appearance, handfeel and compatibility with that supporting layer.

Compare the specifications that change the buying decision

The useful comparison is not simply stretch versus non-stretch. Review the fields that affect cutting, sewing, appearance and approval. Keep fixed buyer requirements separate from fields the factory may develop during sampling.

Do not turn these fields into one permanent factory specification table. A custom lingerie programme may change the yarn direction, structure, width, motif, finish or colour standard. The RFQ should identify which fields are fixed by the buyer and which fields the factory may develop during sampling.

Why motif repeat, usable width and scallop matter

Lace is purchased by nominal width, but garments are cut from the usable patterned area. A full-width measurement can include edge zones that cannot be placed in the marker. If the buyer prices from nominal width while the pattern team works from usable width, fabric consumption and panel placement can be misjudged.

Motif repeat determines how often a pattern unit occurs across and along the fabric. It affects symmetry, paired garment parts, cup placement and visual continuity across seams. A reference image without a ruler or full-width view does not give the mill enough information to reproduce the intended scale.

Scallop requirements should state whether the edge appears on one side or both sides, whether it must remain visible in the garment and how it will be joined. For stretch lace, check the edge after extension and recovery. For rigid lace, confirm that the edge can be cut and sewn without changing the intended motif position.

Before quotation, send a full-width image, close-up image, scale reference and physical swatch where possible. These assets are more useful than an isolated enlarged motif photo.

From artwork to an approved custom stretch lace sample

Once stretch lace has been selected as the development direction, the next task is to convert the reference into an approvable sample. The brief should preserve scale, direction, edge use and garment context; the approval record should then show exactly what was accepted and what remains open.

Start with a reference that preserves scale and direction

A useful development brief separates the visual reference from the production intent. Identify which swatch, artwork file or image controls the design, then mark the scale, motif direction, fabric direction and intended position in the garment. If several references conflict, state which one takes priority instead of asking the sample team to infer it.

Confirm repeat, edge role and usable area

Do not approve the motif as an isolated decorative image. Review how the repeat, edge and usable area work together in the intended panel. The same motif can produce a different cutting result when its scale, repeat direction or edge role changes.

Compare relaxed and agreed extended states

A stretch lace sample can look balanced while relaxed and change noticeably in use. Compare the same sample area in the relaxed state and under the extension agreed for the project. Record the direction and comparison conditions so that later samples are judged on the same basis.

  • Mark the fabric direction and the direction planned for the garment panel.
  • Record the agreed extension or test conditions used for this comparison; do not present them as a universal lace threshold.
  • Photograph or inspect the same motif area in relaxed and extended states.
  • Compare motif distortion, opening size, transparency, scallop shape and appearance after recovery.
  • When the result depends on lining, elastic or seam construction, repeat the review with the intended layer combination.

Approve a version, not an untracked sample

A sample approval record does not need to be complicated, but it should identify the exact version and the scope of approval. This prevents a colour approval, motif approval or handfeel comment from being interpreted as approval of every construction and commercial field.

Record the approval decision

Close each review with one explicit result. Seeing or discussing a sample is not the same as approving every field for bulk production.

  • Approved for the recorded scope: only the fields listed as approved are closed.
  • Revise and resample: record the motif, edge, direction, colour or appearance changes required for the next version.
  • Hold for missing information: pause the decision when the panel use, colour standard, test method or another required input is still unclear.

How should a stretch lace sample be checked?

A stretch lace review should connect measurable extension with the appearance and construction of the garment.

  • Mark the test direction. Identify the fabric direction used in the panel and record whether the result is lengthwise, widthwise or in another agreed direction.
  • Agree on the test method. Record the specimen format, conditioning, load or extension procedure and recovery interval.
  • Review elongation and recovery together. Maximum extension alone does not show whether the lace returns to its original dimensions or retains the intended shape.
  • Inspect the motif while extended. Check pattern distortion, opening size, transparency, scallop shape and colour appearance at the intended garment extension.
  • Sew the real layer combination. Test the lace with the intended lining, elastic, thread, stitch and seam allowance.
  • Apply project-specific durability checks. When required, review laundering, perspiration, colourfastness or other market and brand requirements using the buyer's stated methods.

ISO 105-E04:2013 is a method for testing colour fastness to perspiration. Specify it only when relevant to the programme; it does not create a universal approval threshold for every lingerie lace.

How should a rigid lace sample be checked?

Rigid lace still needs mechanical and garment-level evaluation. The priority shifts from high extension to pattern control, edge behaviour and compatibility with the garment construction.

  • Measure actual give by direction instead of relying on a zero-stretch description.
  • Confirm motif scale, symmetry, placement zones, scallop dimensions and excluded edge areas.
  • Review whether the edge remains controlled around curves and whether the selected cut line interrupts important motifs.
  • Run a sewn-panel trial and check distortion around seams, snagging, broken yarns, wrinkles and edge lift.
  • Assess skin-contact handfeel, opening size, coverage and seam position in the intended lining combination.
  • Approve the physical colour standard and any buyer-specific laundering, perspiration or restricted-substance requirements.

Rigid lace may be the better visual or cutting direction for one panel while stretch lace works better for another panel in the same garment. Sampling by panel job avoids forcing one material to perform incompatible roles.

  • Sending only an enlarged inspiration photo without motif scale, a full-width view, usable edges or a physical reference.
  • Writing only stretch lace in the RFQ without panel role, stretch direction, width format, colour, quantity or approval conditions.
  • Treating rigid lace as absolutely inelastic instead of recording what the sample does in each direction.
  • Using GSM as a support rating even though weight does not describe recovery, modulus, construction or the effect of a supporting lining.
  • Ignoring motif repeat and usable width until costing, even though both fields affect placement and consumption.
  • Approving colour from a phone image instead of an agreed physical reference and viewing condition.
  • Assuming one approved sample closes every bulk risk without recording construction, colour, width, motif, edge treatment, stretch behaviour and required tests.

A first inquiry does not need every final tolerance, but it should give the factory enough context to plan the correct development route.

  • Garment type, target market and exact panel role.

  • Preferred composition direction and any restricted fibres.
  • Target weight and usable width, or permission for the mill to recommend them.
  • Motif repeat, placement and scallop requirements.
